Long Overdue
Published 15 April 2006 in The Argus, Fremont, CA
I was very happy to read that the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation will finally begin building proper psychiatric facilities for inmates who need mental health care. ["Officials unveil plans to build new psych prison facilities", The Argus, 1 April. "State may finally meet federal; mandate", The Argus, 11 April]
As reported in the Argus this development is long overdue it occurred only after a class action suit in federal court, with a federal judge chastising the state corrections department for its "gross systemic deficiencies" that put some of the most vulnerable inmates at an "intolerable risk of harm."
I applaud this development even as I know that many of the targeted prisoners are incarcerated because of actions having to do with their mental disorder, and that prison may not be the best place for them to get well.
