More Mental Health Care Spending Needed

Published 30 April 2007 in The Argus, Fremont, CA

Dear Editor,

I wish to thank you for editorial of April 21, "Cho makes case for better mental health care."

As a minister who works with people with mental health problems, I am reminded on a daily basis of truth of your statements that we too often mimic, shun or even make fun of the mentally ill; and that we sorely need progress in detection, prevention, acceptance and treatment of mental health problems.

The money from the Mental Health Services Act (Proposition 63 that taxes people earning over $1 million) will be a start in making a difference in California mental health care.

But, more is needed. We all need to be alert to and aware of situations where we can make a difference.

Thank you for an important message that will hopefully be heeded.
