Local minister wins mental health award for TV show

FREMONT - A local public-access cable television show covering mental health has won the 2008 Media Award from the Alameda County Mental Health Board.
On May 28, the Rev. Barbara Meyers will be presented with the award by the mental health board for her public access TV show "Mental Health Matters." The award ceremony will be held at the Jack London Aquatic Center, 115 Embarcadero East, Oakland.
Meyers, a community minister at the Mission Peak Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Fremont, started producing the TV show last year after a member of her congregation who had a public access show suggested that she create one, too.
Her episodes have dealt with the stigma of mental health, suicide, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Her latest episode, recorded in April, focused on spirituality and mental health.
The media award is one of several handed out yearly by the Alameda County Mental Health Board, which also honors volunteers and professionals.
Meyer's show is broadcast throughout the Tri-City area and other parts of the East Bay. Episodes can also be seen online at mpuuc.org/mentalhealth/mentalTVshow.html .
