Many Clergy Support Same-Sex Marriage
Published 17 July 2006 in The Argus, Fremont, CA
There was a large clergy presence in San Francisco when California's Court of Appeal heard arguments about whether California's same-sex marriage ban is constitutional.
Most of those clergy present were against same-sex marriage. I would like to go on record as a member of the clergy who strongly believes that the ban is unconstitutional and who strongly supports marriage between two people regardless of gender.
I am not by any means alone among clergy with these beliefs.
An Interfaith Amici Brief [Friend of the Court] to the Court of Appeal was signed by 250 members of the clergy from many different religious faiths: Protestant, Catholic, Jewish and others.
I have conducted union ceremonies between same-sex couples and can testify that these are just as holy and sacred and deeply felt commitments as any heterosexual couples that I know.
I simply can't see how celebrating the love and commitment people feel to each other is a threat to anyone or anything.
Like many of my clergy colleagues, I will be awaiting the court's decision, praying for a compassionate ruling.
