Global Warming Task Force

The 2004 General Assembly adopted Threat of Global Warming as its current Study Action Initiative. But how can we as UUs address the many changes that are already underway? What can we do to ensure that the world we leave to our children and grandchildren will not be irrevocably damaged by global climate change?

On August 22, 2004, MPUUC member Justine Burt spoke to our congregation about Global Climate Change and her commitment to working on this issue.

Led by Justine Burt and Chris Cocca, some members of MPUUC are participating in a two-year Carbon Emission Reduction Program. During this pilot program, we will explore ways to reduce our carbon emissions as a congregation.

From Sept. 1 to 30 we kept track of each household's use of:

- Gallons of gasoline purchased (I'm going to keep pen and paper in the cars)
- Airline miles flown (your tickets usually tell the # of miles)
- Number of kilowatt hours (will be on your PG&E bill)
- Number of therms (will be on your PG&E bill)

You can do the same, and then calculate the number of pounds of carbon emitted by going onto this website: http://lomaprieta.sierraclub.org/CO2_calculator.html. On November 22, 2004, Justine reported on the progress of the Carbon Emission Reduction Program under way at MPUUC.
