May 3, Saturday, 9-11 am - Monthly Grounds Upkeep
    Convenor: Paul Davis

The first Saturday of each month, at 9 a.m., anyone who is willing and able (men, women, youth), no advance notice needed, can participate in the grounds keeping work for the whole campus of the First United Methodist Church, as well as cleaning and maintenance for Cole Hall.

If you love flowers, grass and trees, but hate weeds, trash and litter, this is for you. Newcomers are welcome to join in. Spend a couple of hours and you will be greatly appreciated. The Methodists have a high sense of stewardship of the land and its piece of nature, and invite us to share this.

May 12 and 26, Mondays, 7-9 pm - Building the World We Dream About
Convenors: Karen Sindelar and Jodie Xiao

"Building the World We Dream About," an adult religious education course developed by the UUA, will meet regularly on the second and fourth Mondays of every month at Cole Hall, 7 to 9 p.m., starting January 13 and ending in November 2008. The class is hard to describe in a nutshell because it touches on so many aspects of UU principles, but one goal is to help build anti-racist, multicultural habits of mind as well as to provide the practical skills of developing personal strength, critical thinking abilities and working with others to build caring, just, diverse communities.

Childcare is provided. If you did not attend the first two classes in October and November, we invite you to come in January to find out more. Contact Karen Sindelar or Jodie Xiao for more information or to RSVP. All are welcome!

Because the class is designed for each session to build on each of the previous ones as a basis for building new understanding, it is important that participants try to attend every session. Of course life happens and you may not be able to make every single class; in that case Jodie and Karen will work with you after a missed class to carefully review the exercises from that class.

We look forward to the discussions we will have, the learning we will feel, and the small group environment which will bring us closer as a community.

    Convenor: Bobbie Burri

Bobbie Burri invites Caravan Women to join her for a moderate hike – it’s under 4 miles – at Garin/Dry Creek Park in Hayward. After lunching together at Jordan Pond, we’ll take it slowly on the ups and downs through open, grassy fields, along shady Dry Creek Trail, and across 5 quaint bridges.

Bring lunch, good walking shoes, and water. Meet at 10:30 at Cole Hall, 2950 Washington Blvd., Fremont. Parking fee at the park is $4. East Bay Regional Park (EBRP) members park free. Bobbie is a member of EBRP and can drive 4 passengers.

May 17, Saturday, 7-10 pm - Mental Health Movie Night
    Convenor: Barbara Meyers

Join the Mission Peak Mental Health Committee for a showing of the movie Ordinary People starring Mary Tyler Moore, Donald Sutherland and Timothy Hutton. The movie received awards for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor at the 1980 Academy Awards.

The story is about conflict in an upper middle class family following the drowning death of the oldest son and a suicide attempt by the younger son, who was present at the drowning. Following the picture we will have a discussion of the film and the themes it brings forth.

The movie is not appropriate for children. Childcare will be provided. There is a $5 per person donation requested, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

May 31, Saturday - NAMIWALK at Golden Gate Park
    Convenor: Kathryn Lum

It's NAMIWALK time again! NAMI - the National Alliance on Mental Illness - is a nationwide organization providing vital information, support, and advocacy for the mentally ill and their families. All proceeds from our team will go to the local Alameda County chapter of NAMI. Their educational programs include Family-to-Family and Peer-to-Peer, which are free, intensive, nine-week seminars on how to cope with mental illness, for those dealing with it themselves or for their families.

We encourage you to donate online to support a walker, or to sign up to become a walker. Our goal this year is to have 10 walkers from Mission Peak and raise a total of $1000 or more for the local chapter. Go Team!

The men of Mission Peak are invited to the monthly Methodist men's breakfast to be held in Cole Hall (where we have our Sunday services). If you intend to participate in this, please let Paul K. Davis know by the Thursday evening before, so he can inform the cook how much food to buy. The expense is divided among those who attend, and works out to be about $3 for the meal.

June and July, Sunday afternoons - Caravan Women Study Group
    Convenor: Brenda Paddon

The Caravan Women are planning a study group around the book Taking the War out of Our Words: The Art of Powerful Non-Defensive Communication by Sharon Ellison. It is about powerful, non-defensive communication. It's about transforming the way we listen and use words in order to become more compassionate, more sincere and more empowering in our relationships. It applies to our intimate relationships all the way to misunderstandings with hardware store clerks.

Brenda states: "When I was loaned this book by a friend at Mission Peak a couple of years ago, I was skeptical but open-minded. I didn't think that I communicated in a particularly defensive manner but I skimmed the book and started reading. A new and much more peaceful world was revealed to me!

"Through Ellison's techniques I believe I have learned to be a much more empathetic and effective teacher, parent and friend and probably a much better ex-wife, too!"

The study group will meet during June and July - probably on Sunday afternoons. Please notify Brenda Paddon of your interest, so she knows how many books to order. The price is $12 for Caravan Women, regularly $17.
