July 3, Saturday, 6-9 pm - Social Identities Workshop and Potluck
    Convenor: Karen McVey

The Cultural and Racial Inclusiveness Committee (CRIC) is sponsoring a multi-cultural potluck and Social Identities mini-workshop. Dig out your favorite recipe and cook up a dish to share from your heritage or your favorite dish from a culture not your own. And get ready to share aspects of your social identity, some you may not often mention, as we quickly go down a list starting with our age and, among others, asking our first language and religious background.

We often keep aspects of our identity secret or hidden in order to remain acceptable to our social group. In this way we protect ourselves from oppression. What has our society told us is acceptable or appropriate? What traits are considered of value in your social groups? Which traits are not? How do we rank ourselves among our fellow community members?

We will certainly know each other better at the end of this event and I hope we will be freer to be just who we are. Families are welcome for the potluck. Child care will be provided during the workshop (volunteer providers needed!).

Please join us. We’d like to get to know what it’s like to be you! Contact Karen McVey for more information or to RSVP.

July 8, Thursday, 7:30-9 pm - Boutique Workshop
    Convenor: Nancy Marshall

At this Boutique Workshop we will be making beaded Christmas tree earrings. Again, no “talent” needed in assembling these thanks to Karen McVey's finishing abilities!

If you are one of our experienced jewelry makers, feel free to bring along other projects you are working on for the Boutique.

Also, we are looking for old jewelry (like an earring missing its mate or with broken pieces) to recycle into new Boutique items. Please let Karen McVey know if you have any such items or simply bring them to the workshop.

If you missed the June card workshop, there will be a demo and kits to take home at the July workshop. Please RSVP to Nancy Marshall.

August 7, Saturday, 8:00-9:00 am - Men's Breakfast at FUMC
    Convenor: Graham Bell

The men of Mission Peak are invited to the monthly Methodist men's breakfast to be held in Cole Hall (where we have our Sunday services). If you intend to participate in this, please let Jack Mulcahy know by the Thursday evening before, so he can inform the cook how much food to buy. The expense is divided among those who attend, and works out to be about $3 for the meal.

August 7, Saturday, 9-11 am - Monthly Grounds Upkeep
    Convenor: Graham Bell

The first Saturday of each month, at 9 a.m., anyone who is willing and able (men, women, youth), no advance notice needed, can participate in the grounds keeping work for the whole campus of the First United Methodist Church, as well as cleaning and maintenance for Cole Hall.

For this month, there are lots of tall weeds all around the campus that I would like to cut down then spray with weed killer. We have a large two wheeled weed whacker, in the shed, that can be used for level areas. If anyone has a small weed whacker for those hard to reach areas please bring it. There are also some small trees, shrubs and junipers that need pruning. If anyone has a chain saw please bring it. Lots of small weeds that need pulling in the garden area.

If you have old jewelry that could be used as charms, please let Karen know! Iris Fold Cards and Christmas Tree Earrings from earlier workshops may also be available to make. RSVP to Karen.

If you love flowers, grass and trees, but hate weeds, trash and litter, this is for you. We've been doing this for a few months now, and newcomers are welcome to join in. Spend a couple of hours and you will be greatly appreciated. The Methodists have a high sense of stewardship of the land and its piece of nature, and invite us to share this.

November 6, Saturday, 6-9 pm - Black & White Service Auction
    Convenor: Nancy Marshall

Our biggest fundraiser, the Black & White Auction & Boutique, offers many ways for you to be involved in helping our congregation.

Before the event we need people to man the information and ticket-selling table after church in September and October. In October several people will call fellow members to solicite donations. Others will buy food for the kids, order the cakes and get decorations.

With the addition of the Gift Basket Raffle this year, we will need members to put together themed baskets. Many members make a variety of items for the Boutique (see seperate article).

Another way you can help is if you have “connections” – friends or a business – that could donate something for the event. This could be coffee, a gourmet coffee cart, or even a few of the individual cup coffee machines and fancy coffee supplies. Other ideas include tickets, party supplies (plates, cups, napkins) or balloons – anything that will help keep ours costs down. Do you know of a business that would donate a gift basket for the raffle or a service for the auction? Please let Jen King, Nancy Marshall or Karen McVey know if you can help out with your connections!

On the day of the event we need people to set up the Boutique and decorate Cole Hall. Then during the event members will take/sell tickets, set up and serve refreshments, play music, run the Boutique and Gift Basket Raffle, act as auctioneer, record the bids, cashier, do child care and, afterwards, clean up.

If you have helped with the Black & White in the past, we'll soon be calling you! If you would like to change what you do or are a new volunteer, please let Jen, Nancy or Karen know or stop by the information table in September.

And thank you in advance. We know you will have fun and we couldn't do this without you!
