Sunday Services for this Month
July 4 – “Equality” – Independence Day Paul Davis "All men are created equal" - so says our nation's Declaration of Independence. But who is equal? And what does "equal" mean, anyway? And what about our big, but hopefully narrowing, gap between ideals and reality? All are invited to stay after the service and social time for a discussion of the recently enacted anti-immigrant law of the state of Arizona and what would be appropriate in response, organized by the MPUUC Cultural and Racial Inclusiveness Committee. Worship Associate: Yvonne Hughes Music: Jay Steele July 11 – The Serious Business of Play and Joyfulness Allysson McDonald Its summer time, and the living is easy! But we often think of play and enjoyment as frivolous. The work ethic is so pervasive that what we do to keep our bodies strong is called “working out,” we “work through our problems” and “work on relationships.” We have to have “good work habits” – but what about good play habits? Often when I am playful I connect most deeply with others. When I play around with ideas I find true meaning. Creating joy, deepening relationships, searching for truth and meaning – these are spiritual practices. As a recovering serious person, how can I make play and joy part of my everyday life? I am still playing with that question, but I’d like to share some of my insights with you. Worship Associate: Drew Wilson Music: Dannette McGilvray on hymns, with Paul Kwinn on guitar July 18 – Three Cups of Persistence Justine Burt Since 1993 Greg Mortenson has been trying to build schools in impoverished remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Despite an endless series of challenges and setbacks, his team has built over 130 schools in areas where the female illiteracy rate is alarmingly high. What can we learn from his books Three Cups of Tea and Stones into Schools that could apply to our own work for progressive causes? Worship Associate: Paul Davis Music: Linda Snyder July 25 – Introducing “The Third Jesus” Jackie Porter Deepak Chopra's recent book, The Third Jesus, lifts Jesus out of the rigid confines of church dogma and gives us a fresh and profound way to experience him as a wisdom teacher, inviting us to completely transform our consciousness, and creating a “new heaven and a new earth.” Worship Associate: John Porter Music: Brenda Paddon August 1 – On Our Own: The Mental Health Consumer Movement Renu Garg-Peterlinz People in the mental health consumer movement raise consciousness and reveal powerful stories. They advocate the elimination of stigma from our societies, communities, mental health systems, families and, most of all, hearts. We as Unitarian Universalists have strongly supported this cause. Yet, we need to do more. Worship Associate: Mark Rahman Music: Brenda Paddon and Knuti Van Hoven August 8 – War Mark Rahman Between the anniversaries of Hiroshima and Nagasaki it is well to consider that war is not a game among nations nor armies but among peoples who deliver and absorb all the infernal carnage. When one people agrees to engage in the production of war, they and their enemies must suffer terribly regardless of the near and far results. Worship Associate: Jackie Porter Music: Jay Steele August 15 – Mindfulness in Action Patt Saso Patt led a very successful Adult Religious Education class this year in Mindfulness Meditation practices. This morning she will share this meditation practice with us, its background and profound benefits for both mental health and spiritual growth. Class members Brenda Paddon, Calista Ames and Jack Mulcahy will share their experiences of the class. Worship Associate: Jackie Porter Music: Brenda Paddon August 22 – Our Greatest Fear Rev. Barbara Meyers Marianne Williamson has said, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” We will reflect on these words and what they mean to our lives. Worship Associate: Drew Wilson Music: Linda Snyder August 29 – The Brain that Changes Itself
Sharon Davis How does your brain learn to perform all the complex processes needed to move your body, and interpret sounds, sights, taste and touch? How do you learn to think? More importantly, how does your brain change over time, and can you learn to reprogram it? Worship Associate: Yvonne Hughes Music: Mark Kahn September 5 – Labor Day Margaret Sheehan-Rahman Union activists Peggy Rahman and Paul K. Davis will share their views on how supporting work place democracy and collective bargaining affirm our UU principles. Worship Associate: Holly Ito Music: Jay Steele Back to Top
